This book is about embracing our courage and trying new things. It is about taking risks, and learning new skills because of them. It is about recognizing that everyone has a spark, and everyone has challenges. What we can accomplish when we work together and support one another is far greater than when we do it all alone. Every child has brave inside them and they need space to grow that brave to take on life's hard thing. Most importantly, it's a reminder to all of us that that we must be being patient with ourselves as we navigate new goals.
When I think about the play that has had the greatest impact on my life and has given me the most memories, it often involves risky or nature play. Nature has a way of making me feel my best.
Nature play significantly contributes to a child's health and wellness. It encourages unscripted play and limitless exploration. Outdoor play ignites curiosity and teaches children to navigate risks, fostering self-regulation and problem-solving skills that form the foundation for future learning. It also strengthens their resilience and adaptability when things don't go as planned. It builds their confidence and self-esteem.
Instead of saying "be careful" when I notice a risk, I've found that allowing children to experience challenges firsthand enhances their safety awareness and promotes flexible thinking. I've observed that when children are given the freedom to pursue their own ideas, their learning outcomes are remarkably different from what I might have planned.
